Berkeley Folk Festival - 1967

  1. 1967 is fraught with interest, as Folk and Rock intersect. I love the early promotional photos of the band. I see that at least as of the photo, Curley Cooke had left the Steve Miller Band, but Boz Scaggs had not yet joined.

That's also a very early photo of the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band, with Dan Paik and I assume Will Scarlett and Carlin Arriola. Nice to see that Phil Marsh is playing Berkeley (at the Freight) this week.

Based on references to the "Guest Electric Bands," I wonder if some other electric bands didn't drop in as well.

  2. In terms of the guest bands, we have a contributor who recalls seeing the Chambers Brothers play a soul-based set and then finish with Time Has Come Today. Ross.

  3. I have incredibly fond memories of this festival and in particular the concert in Pauley Ballroom with the James Cotton Blues Band. As a 14 yr old kid, I only got in because I followed some frat boys who figured out a way to sneak in by pretending to be event staff (back before security at such events was a big deal). The energy that James Cotton displayed on the stage was UNBELIEVABLE as he would howl on his harmonica, leap into the air, land on his back and then cruise around the stage that way, never missing a beat. Over the next few years, I looked forward with great anticipation to this festival and was really disappointed when it died a quiet death several years later. Thank you Barry Oliver for the gift that was this annual music festival.

  4. The brochure shows Phil Spector as one of the featured guests but I can't read the schedule of events to determine if he was scheduled to play or speak. He gave a lecture on campus (Dwinelle Hall as I recall) in 67 or 68 (Griel Marcus has written about it) which I attended. Was that lecture somehow connected to the Folk Festival? Does anybody know if he was at the festival?

  6. I was VERY fortunate to attend the entirety of the '67 Festival. It was one of the watershed events of my young life. It was my first ever "roadtrip" and I hitch hiked up from LA with a great friend who unfortunately passed away about a year and a half ago. We stayed with friends who lived on Prince St., just west of Telegraph Ave. Getting off the bus (our last ride had taken us from Refugio Beach near Santa Barbara and let us off on Mission St. at the Transbay Terminal) at Shattuck and Telegraph was like Alice going through the looking glass for this 16 year old kid. Some memories include seeing the likes of Doc Watson, Rev. Gary Davis, Cleanliness & Godliness Skiffle Band, Steve Miller Blues Band, James Cotton Blues Band, Mance Lipscomb (who wasn't on the bill but played a set out in the plaza near the Student Union), Country Joe & The Fish, The Youngbloods, and probably the worst band I ever saw. They were Red Crayola, from Texas and only played once at the Jubilee Concert on the 4th of July at the Greek Theater. It was the only time in my life I ever saw an act get booed off the stage.

  7. I still have the program that's shown above. Of course it's almost 50 years old now so it's pretty beat up, but then so am I.
